A quick, accurate bone health scan to assess and support early osteoporosis diagnosis

Dexa Scans

A Quick, Painless Test to Measure Bone Density and Strength

What is a DEXA scan?

A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan is an imaging test that uses a very low-dose X-ray to measure bone density and give an indication of bone strength. It is widely regarded as the gold standard for identifying changes in bone health, including osteoporosis (a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break).

Bone density naturally decreases as we age. Some people may experience lower bone density earlier, particularly if they have risk factors such as a family history of osteoporosis, early menopause or long-term use of steroid medication.

At Heath Lodge Clinic, we’re proud to offer affordable, quality scans without the wait. Our DEXA scans take place in a calm and welcoming setting, with clear guidance at every stage.

Understand Your Bone Health and Reduce the Risk of Fractures

The benefits of a DEXA scan

A DEXA scan provides a reliable assessment of your bone density, helping to identify changes in bone health early and guide treatment decisions, if needed.

Benefits of a DEXA scan include:

  • Accurate measurement of bone density using low-dose X-ray technology
  • Earlier detection of low bone mass or osteoporosis, guiding steps to support bone health
  • More precise results than standard X-rays, which cannot reliably measure bone density
  • Ability to monitor changes in bone health over time
  • Insight into how bone health may be responding to treatment

Is a DEXA scan right for me?

A DEXA scan may be helpful if you have risk factors for low bone density, concerns about osteoporosis or would like a clearer picture of your bone health as you get older.

You might consider a scan if you have:

  • A family history of osteoporosis
  • Experienced early menopause
  • Taken steroid medication over a long period
  • Had a previous fracture or concerns about bone strength
  • Been advised to monitor your bone density over time

Your GP or specialist may recommend a DEXA scan based on your medical history.

What to expect when having a DEXA scan

Your DEXA scan is designed to be a simple and comfortable experience. From the moment you arrive to the end of your appointment, our team will make sure you feel at ease. Most appointments are straightforward and require minimal preparation.

Before your scan

You can eat and drink as normal before your appointment. In most cases, no special preparation is needed, although you may be asked to avoid wearing clothing with metal, such as zips or buttons. You may be asked to change into a gown.

During your scan

You will be asked to lie still on a scanning table while the images are taken. The scan is quick, painless and non-invasive, and typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes.

After your scan

Once your scan is finished, you can return to your usual activities straight away. Your images will be reviewed by a specialist reporting clinician, and the results will be shared with you or your referring clinician.

Overall, the appointment is straightforward, and you will usually be in and out of the clinic within around 30 minutes.

DEXA scan frequently asked questions

Have questions about your scan or appointment? Our FAQs cover what you can expect when visiting Heath Lodge Clinic.

Are Dexa scans painful?

DEXA scans are completely painless. You will lie comfortably on a padded table while the scanner moves slowly over your body. There are no injections, and most people don’t experience any discomfort during the scan.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, you are welcome to bring a friend or family member for support. For safety reasons, they may be asked to wait in the reception area during the scan.

I’m claustrophobic. Will this be a problem?

DEXA scanners are open and flat rather than enclosed, which many people find more comfortable. You will not be placed inside a tunnel, and the space around you remains open.

Are there any side effects of a DEXA scan?

DEXA scans use very low levels of radiation and are widely considered safe. There are no known side effects, and you can return to your normal activities straight after your appointment.
