The gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis

Dexa Scans

A Quick, Painless Test to Measure Bone Density and Strength

What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA uses a very low X-Ray technique to measure bone density and is the gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis. We all develop osteoporosis if we live long enough but some people are at risk of developing osteoporosis with a low bone density at an early age. There are a number of risk factors including a family history, an early menopause for women, long-term steroid use for everybody, etc.

Understand Your Bone Health and Reduce the Risk of Fractures

What are the benefits of a DEXA scan?

DEXA is an effective and accurate test that is designed to measure normal bone and produces numbers as a measure of density of bones. DEXA scans can measure the mineral content in your bones, which can’t be measured as accurately in an ordinary X-Ray.

It is advantageous for clinicians to monitor your bone density if necessary and assess the effectiveness of treatment for low bone mineral density. Unlike ordinary X-Rays, DEXA scans can measure reduction in bone density which makes it possible to diagnose low bone mass/osteoporosis before you break a bone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about your scan or appointment? Our FAQs cover everything you need to know before visiting Heath Lodge Clinic.

What is an Dexa scan?

A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a quick, non-invasive test used to measure bone density. It helps assess your risk of osteoporosis and fractures by showing how strong your bones are.

Are Dexa scans painful?

Not at all. A DEXA scan is completely painless. You simply lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over your body — there are no injections, tunnels, or discomfort.

Is there anything that I can expect on the day?

You’ll be asked to lie still for a few minutes while the scan is carried out. The process is simple and usually takes no more than 15–20 minutes. You can eat and drink normally beforehand, and you won’t need to get changed unless you’re wearing metal.

What’s the usual time frame for an Dexa scan?

The scan itself typically takes around 15 minutes, and you’ll usually be in and out of the clinic within 30 minutes. Results are reviewed by a consultant radiologist and shared promptly with you or your referring clinician.

Can I bring a friend with me?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member along for support. However, they may need to wait in our reception area during the scan for safety reasons.

I am claustrophobic and not sure if I will be able to go into the scanner?

DEXA scanners are open and flat — not enclosed like MRI machines — so they’re ideal for people with claustrophobia. You won’t be placed inside a tunnel, and the space around you remains open and comfortable.

Are there any side effects that I should be aware of?

DEXA scans use very low levels of radiation and are considered extremely safe. There are no known side effects, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after your scan.
